The Easy Solution that Patients Already Know How to Use

As hospitals become more electronic, areas where paper persists become more difficult to blend into new workflows. One of the hard-to-automate areas is patient-generated documentation, including informed consent form signatures, HIPAA acknowledgement form signatures and medical history forms.

Paper forms are used by even the most automated hospitals because they are easy and fast for patients to use, yet they create a lot of work behind the scenes to route to Medical Records, scan and index. Timeliness can also be a problem as some signatures need to be viewed prior to surgery but may not have been scanned into the hospital EHR yet.

Alternatives to paper for patient-generated documentation address some of these issues, but create new problems of their own. Kiosks, for example, take up space and require staff members to assist patients in using them. Digital signature pads require a separate monitor for the patient to see what is being signed and space at registration desks is often too limited.
