Physician practices and other outpatient settings, such as ambulatory surgery centers, still have a proliferation of paper charts and forms despite the decades-long existence of electronic health record systems. Healthcare providers in these settings usually enjoy the output benefits of EHR, such as accessing patient data electronically from multiple locations or being able to produce reports across the patient population. Yet, traditionally, they have been reluctant to do the data input work required by most EHRs, whether typing or selecting from dropdown lists.
